Poseidon was born to Cronus and Rhea. He has six siblings: Hades, Demeter, Hera, Zeus, and Hestia. After Cronus ate his children for fear that they would overthrow him as he had overthrown his father Uranus, Poseidon was saved by Rhea who concealed him among a flock of lambs and tricked Cronus into eating a stone instead.

When Zeus led the revolt against the Titans, Poseidon fought on his side. He defeated several Titans with his trident and helped Zeus bind them in Tartarus. For his loyalty and aid during the war, Zeus rewarded Poseidon with dominion over the sea.

Poseidon married Amphitrite, a Nereid (sea nymph), and had many children including Triton (a merman) and Pegasus (a winged horse). He also had an affair with Medusa which resulted in her having two children by him: Chrysaor (a giant) and Pegasus (again). As lord of the sea, Poseidon was responsible for navigation and commerce but he was also associated with shipwrecks and floods.

Sailors prayed to Poseidon for a safe voyage but made offerings to him after a successful one as well. It was believed that angering Poseidon could result in bad weather or other disasters at sea so people tried to placate him with gifts or sacrifices if they had offended him in some way.

He represented human industry and ingenuity and showed that even those who are considered “different” can achieve great things.
