Quick Kids Craft: Nautical Wind Chime

Quick Kids Craft Nautical Wind Chime

Lately, my family has been spending some time at a local beach here in Western New York. It’s a far cry from the sandy beaches along the ocean, but it’s a leap up from the five feet of snow that we may get on an occasion.

At the last visit to the beach, my daughter broke my heart when her tear-filled eyes looked up at me and asked: “Mamma, where are all the seashells?” I glanced out into the murky depths of Lake Erie and replied: “They went south for the summer.” She then asked if we could get some and paint them.

I told her we would do one better and make it into a “Shell Chime” and that she had to find me the perfect driftwood. We had fun and got creative with this very easy craft that made a great mommy and me project! Lake Erie did provide us with a surplus of driftwood.

Classified: Very Easy– is great for any age with adult help!

What you need:

  • Seashells
  • Driftwood
  • Acrylic Paint
  • Acrylic Sealer
  • Paintbrushes
  • Glue or hot glue gun
  • Twine, yarn, chain, etc.
  • Optional: small screw-eyes

What to do:

1: Preparation (collection of materials): If you live by a sea or ocean have fun collecting various shells and driftwood along the shore side. If you are like me, with the ocean being a long way away- have fun hunting at your local craft, dollar or department store! If you can, go to a local creek or beach to find a piece of driftwood.

2. Using acrylic paint, have your child paint all the seashells and driftwood in their choice of colors. Allow to dry and have an adult apply acrylic sealer (optional).

5. Tie/Glue/screw eye your thread/twine/chain/yarn to the piece of painted driftwood.
